Obituary of Jose C. Ruiz

Please share a memory of Jose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ruiz passed away on January 12, 2023, in San Jose, California, surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old. Son of Aurelia Cortes and Juan Ruiz, José was born on February 1, 1930 in El Cerrito Colorado, Michoacán, México. José was 17 years old when he emigrated to the United States for the first time through the bracero program. In 1949 he married his life partner, Carmen Ruiz Olvera and together they raised eleven children. For many years he worked in agriculture throughout California. By the end of the 1970s, he decided to settle down in Hollister, where his family joined him soon after and where he worked the crops in the area including apples, apricots, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Once retired, José tended to his vegetable garden and fruit trees. He liked to read the newspaper and watch the news. You could always start up a conversation with him about any topic and he was ready to offer his opinion but what he enjoyed most was sharing stories and anecdotes from his youth. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his most precious treasure; celebrating their accomplishments, offering advice, and encouragement. He loved the family gatherings and enjoyed seeing everyone spend time together and joke around with each other. His favorite food was the tacos with beans and cheese that his wife cooked for him. His family and friends will miss him deeply. José is preceded in death by his parents Aurelia Cortes and Juan Ruiz, his daughter Josefina Cortes, his grandson Jaime Ruiz, his great-granddaughter Aaliyah, his siblings Juanita Zendejas, Rafael Ruiz, Efren Ruiz, Chuche Ruiz, Maria Ruiz and Aurelio Ruiz. José leaves behind his wife, whom he was married to for 73 years, Carmen Ruiz, his ten children Enrique Ruiz (Edelmira), (Jesus Cortes), Juan Ruiz (Herlinda), Maria Orozco (Juan), Roberto Ruiz (Angelica), Eva Garcia (Octavio), Carmen Zendejas (Sergio †), David Ruiz (Lourdes), Graciela Medina (Ismael), Rosalia Lozano (Guadalupe), Liliana Ruiz (Lorenzo) and son-in-law Jesus Cortes. He is also survived by 34 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Services will be held on January 26 and 27, 2023.
